How the drywall calculator works
Sheets = ⌈ (wall area + ceiling) × 1.10 ÷ sheet size ⌉
We measure the wall area around the room (and the ceiling if you include it), add 10% for cuts and waste, then divide by the square footage of one sheet. A 4×8 sheet covers 32 sq ft; a 4×12 covers 48.
Frequently asked questions
How many drywall sheets do I need for a 12×12 room?
A 12×12 room with 8 ft walls needs about 12 sheets of 4×8 drywall for the walls, or roughly 14 including the ceiling, once waste is added.
How much joint compound and screws?
Plan on about one box of joint compound per 450 sq ft, and roughly one screw every 12 inches along studs.
