How the roof shingle calculator works
Roof area = footprint × pitch factor. Bundles = ⌈ (area ÷ 100) × 3 ⌉
Shingles are sold by the “square” (100 sq ft), and it takes about 3 bundles to cover one square. Your roof is bigger than its footprint because of the slope, so we multiply by a pitch factor (a 6-in-12 roof is about 1.12× its footprint).
