How the tile calculator works
We calculate your total area in square feet, work out the square footage covered by a single tile (tile width × height ÷ 144), add a waste allowance for cuts and breakage, then divide to get the number of tiles — rounded up.
- Order extra: tiles break during cutting, and you'll want spares for future repairs.
- Patterns need more: diagonal and herringbone layouts waste more material.
- Buy one dye lot so color and finish match across every box.
Frequently asked questions
How much extra tile should I buy?
Add at least 10% for cuts and breakage on a standard straight layout, and 15–20% for diagonal or patterned installs.
How do I figure square feet per tile?
Multiply the tile's width and height in inches, then divide by 144. A 12×12 inch tile is exactly 1 square foot.
