How the mulch calculator works
Cubic yards = (Length × Width × Depth in feet) ÷ 27
Mulch is sold by the cubic yard (bulk) or in 2-cubic-foot bags. We multiply your bed area by the depth to get the volume, then convert to yards and bags. A 2-3 inch layer is ideal for weed control without smothering plants.
Frequently asked questions
How many bags of mulch are in a cubic yard?
About 13.5 two-cubic-foot bags make one cubic yard, so bulk delivery is usually cheaper once you need more than about 10 bags.
How deep should mulch be?
2 to 3 inches is ideal — enough to suppress weeds and hold moisture, without piling it against plant stems.
